" Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings As we started for Huntington Dell. — "The Trolley Song" A classic 1944 musical adapted from the stories of Sally Benson, Meet Me in St. Louis was directed by Vincente Minnelli and starred his future wife, Judy Garland. It follows the lives of the Smith family, who live in St. Louis during the turn of the century. In particular, it follows the second-eldest daughter, Esther, her youngest sister Tootie, and Esther's crush, John. Everyone is excited with the coming of the 1904 World's fair; however, that all changes when Mr. Smith announces that the family might be uprooted to New York. A Screen-to-Stage Adaptation went to Broadway in 1989. This film features examples of: Adorably Precocious Child: Tootie is only five and has a strange obsession with play-acting that her dolls die of fatal diseases and holding funerals for them. She also apparently buries them in the cemetery. Adorkable: Esther's crush, John Truitt. He's an exceptionally nice and well-mannered young man, but he tends to be a bit awkward, or accidentally put his foot in his mouth. His first time alone with Esther, he compliments her perfume, and when she tells him what it is, he remarks "Exactly the kind my grandmother uses! " When they shake hands as he's leaving, his awkward parting words are, "You've got a mighty strong grip, for a girl! " All There in the Manual: According to the script (and a line at the Winter Ball), Grandpa's last name is Prophater, making him Anna's father and not Alonso's. Aluminum Christmas Trees: Alonso makes reference to a baseball team called the Baltimore Orioles. They weren't Major League in 1903, but they were a AAA team. They'd become Major League in 1954. Ambiguous Innocence: Tootie and Agnes, the youngest of the Smith family, certainly qualify. When Katie, the family's cook, tells Agnes that she kicked her cat down the cellar stairs, Agnes cries, "If you've killed her, I'll kill you! I'll stab you to death in your sleep and tie you to two wild horses 'til you're pulled apart! " It's obvious that she would never actually attempt this, but while she is a sweet and mostly ordinary girl, she seems to have a keen interest in gore and graphic violence, and it's rather troubling at times. She even hopes aloud that Rose got her a hunting knife for Christmas. Tootie, meanwhile, loves to play with her dolls like any normal child, but she also likes to say that they have "four fatal diseases" so that they can "die" and she can give them "beautiful funerals" and bury them in the graveyard. When Mr. Smith announces that they'll be moving, she comments, "It'll take a week to dig up all my dolls from the cemetery! " She also apparently has a plan to dig a tunnel into a neighbour's yard just so that she can grab her legs when she's walking past. Their mischievousness crosses into the territory of Enfant Terrible when they stuff a dress to make it look like a body and put it on the streetcar tracks to see what will happen. Tootie gets injured when Esther's crush, John, tries to hide her and Agnes from the police. Then Tootie even tries a Wounded Gazelle Gambit to get out of trouble, claiming that John tried to kill her. Even when the family discovers what really happened from Agnes, both the girls get off scot-free. Tootie doesn't even get punished for lying about John. Anguished Declaration of Love: Having finally made up his mind about his feelings for Rose, Warren decides to make them known by bursting into her house after midnight on Christmas morning and loudly declaring in front of her entire family that "We are to be married at the earliest opportunity and I don't want to hear any argument about it! " Rose is overjoyed, but doesn't get to say a single word in reply before Warren storms back out. Artistic Licence - Geography: Mountains can occasionally be seen in some shots. St Louis is on the prairie and does not have any mountains. "The Trolley Song" gives the World's Fair location as Huntington Park. It was actually Forest Park. Artistic Licence – History: The film takes place in 1903 and opens with several characters singing the song "Meet Me in St Louis", which wasn't written until 1904. Tootie likewise sings a bit of the hymn "Brighten the Corner Where You Are", which wasn't written until 1913. John says that he and Esther are "almost" the legal age to marry without their parents' consent. They are seventeen, but in Missouri at the time, the marrying age was fifteen. Betty and Veronica: Subverted. While she certainly is "alluring and exotic", Lucille turns out to be a nice and mature person — arguably the most mature of the group — and lets Rose have Warren because she knows it's her he's interested in. It really doesn't hurt that Lucille herself is much more interested in Rose's brother Lon. Broken Tears: At Christmas, while Esther is singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", Tootie realizes how much she's going to miss St. Louis, and has a full-blown meltdown where she runs out of the house in tears and starts destroying all the snow people they had made, because she can't take them with her to New York. Christmas Songs: Introduced that standard, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. " Cool Old Guy: Grandpa. He sings (and dances! ) along to "Meet Me In St. Louis", he's more cheerful and optimistic than his son, he knows how to comfort Esther when she doesn't have a date to the dance, he's fun-loving, gives the younger girls advice on how to make the flour stick to their trick-or-treat victims, and he is more tolerant and willing to humor his grandchildren than their father is. Costume Porn: A lot of lavish dresses, particularly on Esther and Rose. In the scene of the World's Fair, Agnes and Tootie get to be dressed up in plenty of frills and bows as well. Crappy Holidays: The Smiths' Christmas is under a pall due to the family's imminent move to New York. Ultimately subverted when Mr. Smith announces they're staying in St. Louis after all, followed by Warren proposing to Rose. Deadpan Snarker: Almost everybody gets some snark in at least once. Grandpa uses it very effectively to comment on the entire family keeping a secret from Mr. Smith alone: "Your papa's not supposed to know. It's enough we're letting him work hard every day to support the whole flock of us. He can't have everything. " Katie gets in on the Deadpan Snarker game frequently. (See Servile Snarker. ) Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Subverted. Esther attacks John when she thinks he attacked Tootie. When she discovers Tootie lied, she's incredibly guilty and apologises, and John shows her all the injuries she caused. It's glossed over after that scene though. Fiery Redhead: Esther, with her reddish-blonde hair, is a bit tomboyish, very protective of her sisters (to the point of beating up her crush because she thought he hurt one of them) and very spirited. Fix Fic: In real life Sally Benson's family did move to New York, instead of the last minute change of heart depicted in the film. Girl Next Door: Inverted, as the girl is the main character and sings about "The Boy Next Door. " Halloween Episode: There's a whole Halloween scene for the "Autumn 1903" bit. Happily Married: Lon and Anna Smith, played by Leon Ames and Mary Astor. They share an incredibly lovely duet called "You and I" just to drive the point home. Have a Gay Old Time: The line Make the Yuletide gay, from "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". Hollywood Costuming: Although the costumes themselves are fairly accurate to the time period, Rose and Esther wear their hair down at a lot of social gatherings when girls of their age would surely have worn it up, as pretty much every other woman in the film does. Hypocritical Humor: Rose is not pleased with Esther drawing attention to her relationship with Warren by trying to make sure everybody's out of the room when he calls, and haughtily declares, "When you get to be my age, you'll realize that there are more important things in life than boys! " This becomes amusing in hindsight, as it becomes clear that Rose is by far the more boy-crazy one. She also claims she doesn't care about Warren's phone call, but then starts crying when it seems that she's missed it. Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mr. Smith. He can be, as he puts it, "a little bombastic" when things aren't going his way. But it's also shown very clearly that he genuinely loves every member of his family, and this scene reveals what a softie he can be: Mr. Smith: Anna, I'm curious — just when was I voted out of this family? Mrs. Smith: Oh, Lon, really now. Mr. Smith: What else am I to think? My eldest daughter is practically on her honeymoon and everybody knows about it but me! In view of this family's refusal to let me in on their little intrigues, I'll handle the telephone in my own way! From now on, I'll take all incoming calls! [telephone rings] [beat] Mr. Smith: …Rose, you answer that. Informed Poverty: Mr. Smith's income alone is apparently enough to support a family of seven (plus a cat), and pay for a live-in maid, in a house that's large by almost any standard, with enormous, luxurious rooms, good furniture, lots of decor, a large yard, etc. The family doesn't seem to want for anything, and doesn't appear to be struggling; they host parties, attend parties, wear good clothes, send the oldest to college, go to the St. Louis World's Fair, etc., without any implication that these expenses will cause financial difficulty. Yet, when Agnes asks why they wouldn't be living in a house in New York, Rose replies, " Rich people live in houses. People like us live in flats", implying that they're considered middle class at best. It's not clear if this discrepancy is because the creators just couldn't be bothered making them appear less well-off, or if it's a justified artifact of the setting (St. Louis in 1903-1904), where the middle class might have had a much higher standard of living than they have on average nowadays. (Not to mention that New York may have had a much higher cost of living than St. Louis, just like it does today; Rose may have only meant that they're not rich compared to people who can afford houses in New York. ) Karma Houdini: Neither Tootie nor Agnes receive any punishment whatsoever for almost causing a streetcar accident on purpose, and anyone with the least bit of sense would've severely punished Tootie for falsely claiming that John Truitt tried to kill her — especially when he in fact had tried to help her; but she doesn't get so much as a spanking because everyone decides it's funny. Because reckless endangerment and defamation are hilarious. What's worse is that Rose even defends Tootie when Esther gets mad at her for lying. "After all, she was good about her lip and didn't cry! " Not to mention that earlier in the scene, when Rose says to Agnes, " You might have killed dozens of people! ", Agnes replies, "Oh, Rose! You're so stuck-up! " Apparently the film agrees, since Rose ends up just laughing about it with them, leading to some Values Dissonance. Love at First Sight: "The moment I saw him smile, I knew he was just my style / My only regret is we've never met, though I dream of him all the while... " Love Triangle: Between Rose, Warren, and Lucille (as well as between Warren, Lucille, and Alonzo Jr). It doesn't last long, though. Lyrical Dissonance: Subverted for "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas;" the original lyrics were quite depressing as per the slow song it is. (Not that the version in the film is exactly a barrel of laughs. ) The song-writer later said it was written with a eye to the soldiers fighting in WW2. The opening lines were: Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas / It might be your last. ' My God, What Have I Done? : Esther has a mild case after she beats up John for hurting Tootie, only to realize that John was innocent, and in fact did what he could to protect Tootie. Smith also has his moment when he witnesses Tootie's startling meltdown over the prospect of moving out of St. Louis. This inspires him to change his mind and call off the move. Nice Guy: John Truitt. He is friendly, polite, and kind. He also turns out to be quite selfless; later in the film he drags Tootie away from an accident she caused so that she wouldn't get in trouble, despite the risk of getting in trouble himself. Then, when Esther thinks he hurt Tootie and beats him up over it, he forgives her almost immediately when she returns to apologize, and even initiates their First Kiss moments later. Of Corset Hurts: One scene features Rose lacing a reluctant and complaining Esther into a corset in preparation for a party. Of Corsets Sexy: The same sequence above continues for a while with Esther and Rose in the corsets to provide mild Fanservice. Old Maid: Esther acts as if Rose is this, when she appears to be eighteen or nineteen. The girls squeal as Rose arrives home. Pair the Spares: Unusually, two separate love triangles are resolved in one stroke: Rose/Warren/Lucille and Warren/Lucille/Lon Jr are both neatly dealt with by making Rose/Warren and Lucille/Lon the Official Couples. Post-Kiss Catatonia: Esther is hit hard with this after her First Kiss with John. All she can say in reply is "You've got a mighty strong grip for a boy. " She then saunters away in a dreamlike state, and is still out of it when she makes her way into her house and sits at the dining room table. Mrs. Smith: Esther, your ice cream is melting. Esther: [dreamily] Isn't it? Public Secret Message: Rose to Esther: "The plans have changed. " Redhead In Green: Rose has redder hair than Esther and wears a green evening dress to the Christmas party. Romantic Wingman: Grandpa for Esther at the ball, especially when he whisks her away from one of the guys on her dance card, and then hands her off to John when he unexpectedly arrives. Grandpa: Pardon me, young man, but in the great country of China, when a stranger admires one of your possessions, it's common courtesy to offer it to him. Kid at the ball: That's very interesting… Grandpa: Yes. Well I spent many years in China, and if you want to make me feel thoroughly at home, you might offer me your partner. Kid at the ball: Huh? Grandpa: Spoken like a gentleman. Servile Snarker: Katie is wonderful. Agnes: Katie, where's my cat? Where is she? Katie: I don't know... a little while ago she got in my way so I kicked her down the cellar steps. I could hear her spine hit on every step! Agnes: [horrified] Oh! If you've killed her, I'll kill you! I'll stab you to death in your sleep and tie you to two wild horses 'til you're pulled apart! Katie: Oh, wouldn't that be terrible now? [pointing at a chair where the cat sits unharmed] There's your cat. Smith: Katie, I'm sorry I couldn't eat an hour earlier. Katie: Don't blame me if the corned beef's an hour tougher! Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Esther falls for John Truitt, who is friendly, kind, soft-spoken, and caring. Tears of Joy: Esther is crying these after John proposes to her. Time to Move: This is the primary conflict of the film. At Halloween, Mr. Smith announces that they're moving to New York, because he's being transferred there for his work. Of course, as per the definition of the trope, he calls it off in the end. Titled After the Song: The title tune was written well before the film. Unspoken Plan Guarantee: This happens to two plans, one at the film's opening, and one near the end: Esther asks Katie to tell "a little white lie" to get Mrs. Smith to agree to having dinner an hour early, so that the family won't be listening in when Warren calls Rose long-distance from New York. Smith either overhears or figures out for herself what the real reason for eating early is. In fact, everyone except Mr. Smith ends up knowing before dinner what's going on *. Then Mr. Smith comes home stressed from work, and refuses to eat an hour early since he was planning on soaking in the cool bath for an hour. Then when they do have dinner, they try to get it over with quickly, but Mr. Smith, whose mood has much improved, suggests they enjoy "a nice, leisurely meal", and resists all attempts to steamroll through dinner. When the phone rings, he answers it, and when asked about a call from New York, says he's "not calling New York", and the operator hangs up. Despite the Plan saves the day and Rose gets her call (though Warren doesn't propose as everyone expected). Esther and Rose's plan to ruin Lucille Ballard's evening would have worked beautifully if not for the fact that Lucille turned out to be arguably the most mature of the group, insisting Warren spend the night with Rose because he spends all his time talking about her anyway, leaving them no choice but to cancel the plan. Seeing as Grandpa seemed to have figured out what was going on even before the plan was botched, he might have ended up intervening if they hadn't called it off on their own, so it may have been doomed either way. What Happened to the Mouse? : There's never any answer given for how John got a tuxedo for the Christmas dance. Maybe he found that tailor? Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Tootie tries this to avoid admitting how she hurt herself and getting in trouble.

All this sweetness and light is nicely balanced by Margaret O'Brien's portrayal of the little girl and her obsession with her dead - and buried - dolls. It's a delightful touch of ghoulish comedy - Margaret O'Brien really pulls it off, too (I also saw her, recently, in "The Secret Garden" and I was really impressed with her maturity and range in that film. In fact, the entire Hallowe'en sequence is a sheer phantasmagorical delight, perfectly capturing the illusions and imagination of childhood. I know someone who adamantly refuses to watch old movies. Not to seem smug or superior, but it's too bad, because experiencing the world from another time and place, spirit and mind-set, and marvelling at the beauty created by artists and technology of the past, are priceless. Movies can do that for you. So whenever I need to dream a little dream I pull out my copy of "Meet Me in St. Louis" or simply arrange to be home when it's playing on TCM. Then I move on with my life.

Non seulement il me semblait l'avoir toujours connu, mais sa seule présence élargissait mon âme d'une étrange façon. La résonance vibratoire de notre union fut si forte que je crus perdre la raison. Notre compréhension mutuelle n'avait pas besoin de mots, de gestes ou de regards, et dans chacune de nos entrevues flottait un air de perfection absolue, car nous étions à la fois si semblables et si complémentaires. Lorsque nous nous sommes levés, nos paroles ont poursuivi cet incroyable échange au point même où nous l’avions laissé. « Comme je te l’ai dit, je ne crois pas que Bach… » Cette phrase m’est restée, car au moment où je l’ai prononcée nos yeux se sont croisés avec effroi. Ces manifestations étaient souvent trop étranges pour ne nous procurer que de la joie. Il est difficile de décrire avec des mots ce que je vécus à ce moment-là, et j'ai compris depuis que seuls ceux qui ont eu la chance ou la malchance de vivre cette unicité parfaite peuvent saisir vraiment ce dont il s'agit. Car bien sûr, nous rencontrons dans notre vie des personnes avec lesquelles nous avons de fortes affinités, amis, amours, relations professionnelles. Mais ce que j'évoque ici se situe bien au-delà, au-delà d’une quelconque attirance physique ou intellectuelle, au-delà des mécanismes d’attachement habituels. Une nouvelle compréhension Chance ou malchance en effet, car le départ définitif de cet homme pour un autre hémisphère me plongea dans un tourment infini. Si notre relation très particulière n’aurait jamais pu s’inscrire dans un quotidien, comment néanmoins allais-je désormais pouvoir vivre ce même quotidien sans lui? Je sentis que ma seule échappatoire résiderait dans une tentative de compréhension de ce que j’avais ressenti. La psychologie et la psychanalyse montrèrent vite leurs limites en la matière... Relation « cristallisée », deuil pathologique, projection fantasmatique idéalisée, je connaissais ces gammes par coeur, mais elles étaient loin de donner une explication plausible à ce que j'avais vécu. Et puis surtout, si j'avais de la peine, je ne me sentais pas malade pour autant. Bien au contraire, cette relation avait incroyablement et définitivement accru mes capacités musicales, rédactionnelles, intellectuelles, mais aussi plus globalement de perception du monde, et des sentiments qui nous animent tous, qui nous relient en permanence. Ma façon de jouer du piano par exemple s’est complètement modifiée. Encore aujourd’hui, je compose, je duplique avec une facilité que je n’avais jamais connue par le passé. La littérature m'offrit quelques réponses. Je relus par exemple Belle du Seigneur d'Albert Cohen avec une vision différente. Puis la philosophie, la connaissance des religions m'ouvrirent d'autres champs. Mais c'est plus largement dans des textes spirituels tels que ceux d'Edgar Cayce que je trouvai enfin un début de sens. La description qu’il pouvait faire des couples, des « flammes jumelles » comme il les nommait, fut un soulagement. Sur ces chemins de traverse que je n'aurais jamais cru emprunter un jour, une évidence se dressa: l'âme soeur existe, mais la vision romantique que nous prêtons à ce concept est complètement erronée. C’est une vision développée par nombre de sites de rencontres, qui proposent ce slogan publicitaire aguicheur: « Trouvez votre âme sœur » … Termes galvaudés pour définir quelqu'un qui pourrait vous correspondre en tous points, termes que j'ai si souvent utilisés moi-même sans savoir de quoi je parlais. L'idée est romantique, il faut bien l'avouer, l'idée est belle. Une âme, une personne avec laquelle l'entente serait parfaite. Et voilà qu'en la trouvant nous serions amoureusement comblés, heureux, apaisés enfin. C'est d'ailleurs plus qu'une idée: ce concept appartient à notre inconscient collectif. Socrate mentionnait cette unité parfaite dans Le Banquet de Platon, et beaucoup de religions en font clairement état. Bouddhisme, judaïsme, la traduction même des Écritures l'évoque à mi-mot. La femme n'aurait pas été créée avec une « côte » de l'homme, mais un côté, une moitié. Cette croyance est pratiquement toujours réactivée lorsque survient un état amoureux. La magie qui opère entre deux êtres qui choisissent de s'aimer s'accompagne souvent de pensées spirituelles, de l'idée que l'on se serait enfin trouvé, que le destin s'en serait mêlé, que l'on serait « fait l'un pour l'autre ». La sexualité nous amène d'ailleurs à retrouver cette unité, à ne former qu'un par la fusion des corps. Et puis l'état amoureux s'estompe. L'autre n'est pas celui que l'on croyait, il est différent, de nous, de nos projections fantasmatiques, et il nous faudra composer avec ces différences souvent riches, mais parfois incompréhensibles, sources infinies de la souffrance de nombreux couples. Après la fusion teintée d'idéal vient la réalité de deux êtres bien distincts qui décident de s'unir dans un quotidien qui n'appelle pas toujours l'évidence. Alors on se résigne: « L'âme soeur n’existe pas. » Une perception radicalement différente – et qui n’engage que moi –, me permet aujourd'hui de vivre et de travailler différemment, et je l'espère, mieux. Je pars d'un postulat spirituel auquel tout le monde n'adhère pas: notre âme vit indépendamment de notre corps, et se réincarne plusieurs fois. Dans ces différentes incarnations, elle croisera d'autres âmes qu'elle connaît déjà mais qui auront joué des rôles différents. Notre vision amoureuse par exemple est très terrestre et très limitée, l'amour doit avoir « ailleurs » un aspect bien plus large, un fils dans cette vie-là aura pu être un mari dans une autre. Peu importe, les « familles d'âmes » se recomposent au gré de leurs incarnations. Mais nous n'avons qu'une âme soeur, une seule, j'en suis persuadée. Sans doute la cherchons-nous sans cesse dans notre vie, consciemment ou inconsciemment, et parfois nous la trouvons: c'est un ami, c'est une soeur, c'est un fils, c'est un amant, c'est lui, c'est elle, au-delà des corps. Une énergie libérée Pendant quatre ans, j'ai participé à une émission quotidienne de témoignages sur France 2, où j'intervenais principalement sur les problématiques amoureuses. J'y ai vu et entendu plus de 2 500 personnes. Peu à peu, j’ai su discerner celles qui s'étaient trouvées… Les mots étaient inutiles, et les grandes déclarations n'y changeaient rien. Avant même qu'elles ne commencent à parler se dégageait d'elles une sorte d'énergie peu commune. Ce couple de septuagénaires veufs dont la rencontre remontait à deux ans à peine, se ressemblant en tous points, mus par une compréhension mutuelle hermétique aux autres. Ces deux amies séparées maintes fois mais se retrouvant toujours par le truchement du hasard, et qui avaient fini par partager le même domicile, « car lorsque nous sommes ensemble, nous n'avons besoin de personne d'autre, vous savez? » Oui, maintenant je savais. Et puis, je rencontrais aussi beaucoup d'âmes déboussolées, tourmentées comme j'avais pu l'être, que personne ne semblait comprendre. Elles avaient trouvé leur soeur, mais elles ne partageraient pas cette vie-là et elles en étaient malades, au sens propre comme au figuré: cancer, dépression, errances diverses. Je me souviens de cette femme, Marie, la quarantaine, maman de deux enfants, luttant contre une longue maladie, parlant de l'homme qu'elle avait aimé et qui l'avait quittée: « Je sais qu'il était mon âme soeur, il le savait aussi mais il a eu peur. Notre amour était trop fort, trop exclusif. Cette rencontre a dévasté ma vie, je ne sais plus comment continuer, comment aimer. » La psychothérapie qu'elle avait entreprise n'avait rien changé à ses convictions. Il m'apparut que pour l'aider et avancer moi-même, il me fallait aller au-delà du constat de sa peine. Je me posai alors plusieurs questions. Pourquoi certaines âmes sœurs parvenaient-elles à s'unir sur cette terre et d'autres non? Y avait-il un sens à ces quêtes, ces fusions, ces drames, et si oui lequel? Ce fut un reportage sur Jean-Louis Barrault et Madeleine Renaud qui me mit sur la voie. Ce couple d'acteurs mythiques avait libéré un potentiel créatif exceptionnel de par leur union. Mais il y en avait tant d'autres, des artistes comme Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle, des chercheurs comme Pierre et Marie Curie... La friction de ces âmes avait changé le monde. À bien y réfléchir, il m'apparut que les couples que j'avais croisés modifiaient également leur environnement à leur manière, par leur rayonnement. Ces deux amies ne s'étaient-elles pas engagées dans une association humanitaire? Ces amants septuagénaires n'avaient-ils pas créé un cours de danse de salon pour seniors? Et moi-même, cette incroyable rencontre n'avait-elle pas modifié ma trajectoire, m'amenant à plus de spiritualité, de créativité, à parler de l'amour différemment? Une véritable métamorphose… Peut-être le but de la réunion des âmes soeurs est-il celui-là: générer une énergie particulièrement forte qui se transmet aux autres et qui les modifie à leur tour. Notre bien-être terrestre semble secondaire dans ce schéma-là. Et puis, il doit bien exister un « ailleurs » où ces âmes s'unissent à nouveau, la séparation n’étant que terrestre. J'entrepris de contacter Marie, et quelques autres témoins télévisuels qui étaient alors dans une grande souffrance pour leur faire part de ces réflexions. Je crois que nos échanges furent libérateurs pour nombre d'entre eux. Loin des théories de la psychopathologie, au-delà de la peine, ils avaient tous un potentiel à explorer et à transmettre. Marie va bien aujourd'hui, elle est amoureuse, et elle n'est plus comptable mais sophrologue. Quant à moi, je continue à travailler, à aimer, à grandir, mais différemment, et j'ai écrit cet article. J'espère qu'il pourra aider ceux qui s'y reconnaîtront.

Delphine Girard's film couldn't be more timely and is one that will stay with its audience long after the final credits roll.

"Une soeur" or "A Sister" is a Belgian French-language live action short film that premiered back in 2018 and was nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards almost 1.5 years later. The director is Delphine Girard, apparently still a relatively young filmmaker, and her effort here makes me curious about what we can expect from her once she makes the transition to full feature films. I got to watch all the five nominated live action short films last night before the Oscar ceremony and this one here was the first they showed and also my favorite from the bunch. At approximately 17 minutes, it as also the shortest from the nominees I believe, but the outcome here is a perfect example of how quantity does not equal quality because the other four are inferior, some even drastically. Shame this one probably never really had a chance to take home the prize. But that does not make it worse or anything. When and after watching, I still thought it was merely good, but after thinking a bit about it, I'd say it is even great and one of the finest short movies from its year and also deserving of the Oscar win. This partially has to do with lead actress Veerle Baetens here, who plays an emergency phone hotline operator. I already thought she was amazing on "The Broken Cicle Breakdown" wow... can't believe this one is already almost a decade old. so I recognized her immediately. This film reminded me of a Danish film from not too long ago that was also fairly close to being nominated for an Oscar, but that was a full feature film, so there were plot twwists and everything. This one here is just very focused and essential story-telling that almost feels a bit like a documentary from a police investigation. Fittingly, I read an article not too long ago about a case where a woman called such a hotline to report a case of domestic violence I think and that she (or somebody close to her) is in danger, but she could not speak freely, so she disguised her call as if she was calling to order a pizza. The hotline operator understood and realized it is not a prank and managed to help her to become hero of the day.

Obviously all the picture was filmed on the studio (they are some outside set painting you can see through the windows of the family home but who care's ? The picture is shared in 4 acts (that's more and more rare todays, every blockbuster is sliced in 3 acts like Bambi) and the cast is excellent. M.M.I.S.L looks like a colored and musical remake of Orson Welles'Samson. Is that correct ?

This film is beautiful, and Judy Garland is gorgeous. Are a few people blind? And Judy's singing is absolutely wonderful. I must say though, that most reviews I've read, I've almost never seen anyone badmouth Judy, just on a couple reviews for this film. Other bad reviews I've read, people are usually picking at other things about Judy's films but are still saying they love Judy and her singing and they still think she's pretty.
Anyway, enough about other reviewers. I think Judy is beyond pretty, she's beautiful and heavenly. And her singing is also beautiful and heavenly. I love old fashioned classics such as this film and Judy's other films. The wonderful songs in this film are "the trolley song. the boy next door. have yourself a merry little Christmas" and the title song. Judy and the other characters here are great including a very young Margerate O'Brien. This film and Judy are pure, sweet, wonderful, old fashioned, classic good cheer from Hollywood's golden age.

It's sad that she didn't see herself as beautiful.

The show was widely anticipated and drew a big audience but it just didn't measure up to the film version. I was born in and grew up in St. Louis and my dad was a streetcar motorman on the line which ran behind the Smith house on Kensington Avenue (the real house looked nothing like the home in the film, though it was a beautiful residence in a beautiful neighborhood. M-G-M sent a crew to St. Louis to scout the location of the World's Fair in Forest Park and photograph what little was let, most notably the World Fair Pavilion and the stairway and globe lights down to a fountain with colored lighting. The film got it just right and got every fact correct, The film premiered at the Lowe's State Theatre in St. Louis and the movie became an enormous success for M-G-M. Nearly 70 years later it still holds up perfectly, colorful, warm, charming, nostalgic, the work of a genius director fully in evidence, and a perfect cast.

Using the detailed notes and verbatim dialogue from the actual experiment this film is based on, writer-director Jon Avnet  creates a drama about psychology that's more interesting than entertaining. His attention to detail is admirable, but it's too much. Side events and backstories pop up throughout, with bomb-dropping character reveals that are never mentioned again or seen to carry any relevance. Dead ends aside, Three Christs  is a touching drama that presents a fascinating exploration of psychology, medical ethics, and identity. For families looking for thoughtful conversation, you could go all day finding pockets of conversation starters embedded in the film. The most meaningful may be how people without mental illness interact with those who are going through something that feels unknown and/or frightening. When I served in AFSOC(Air Force Special Operations Command, worked on AC-130's) this story was always talked about. I just hope they do the story justice. Frankly if you read about Tim Wilkinson (PJ) in Somalia, I believe he deserved the MOH, yet he was awarded the AF Cross. He was barely mentioned once or twice as Wilky in Blackhawk Down. Boyd preached for so long he actually began to believe he is Jesus Christ. Goggins had me laughing even in a serious themed movie... cause it brings memories of him in the vice principals. As a big Dinklage's fan, and considering that it was a world premiere, it was easy enough to go check it out. I'm glad I did. This movie is one about the brain and its struggles, but it does so with a big heart. It's funny and touching with a good balance, and the acting is top notch (I'm actually a bigger Dinklage's fan after the movie. The underlying themes about psychiatry as science and its potential negative effect on personality, the nature of identity, the complex interaction of desire and fear are inhabiting the film and are as relevant today as they were at the time. In summary, a great entertaining movie with a deeper layer. and a stellar Dinklage.

I'll start this review off by mentioning something specific and unique about this film that proves that I have seen this film while I suspect one reviewer didn't. The film handles the traditional nativity story while modifying the King Herod's attempt to find the Christ child and the Holy Family and murder them. (And, frankly, IMO, that part of the story that leads to the slaughter of the children of Bethlehem is not a suitable subject for family animated movie for children and is wisely left out of this film.) How they changed the King Herod part was to tell the story from the animal's point of view. The donkey Bo, Dave the bird, and Ruth the lamb all notice a new star in the sky and conclude that something great is doing to happen. Now Bo, who is a donkey of a miller, escapes his cruel master, and is adopted by Mary and Joesph. Only after Mary and Joesph leave on their journey to Bethlehem, does Bo learn that Herod has sent a soldier henchman with a long nasty looking sword and two mean chained together dogs to search for Mary and the baby and kill them. Bo enlists the aid of his friend Dave the dove and a lamb named Ruth, to chase after Mary and Joesph in order to warn them of the Soldier hunting them and to protect the holy family. Bo doesn't know why Mary is being hunted. The camels of the Magi, who Bo, Dave, and Ruth don't meet until the end of the film, witness Herod's original plotting. As I said, the film wisely leaves out the massacre of the children of Bethlehem and stops before that point in the biblical narrative means this film does not have a very violent, bloody, and adult scary scene in it for children to watch.
While telling the nativity story from the animals' point of view is not a new idea, using them to modify, and soften Herod's part is.
The animation is stunning in this film.
The story is easy to fallow and treats the traditional nativity story respectfully while infusing the obviously fictional part of the animals talking. It also has jokes in it to keep the tone of the picture light and easy.
The soundtrack's use of the carols and new music is lively, and enjoyable without getting too heavy handed with the religious theme. But the soundtrack doesn't get too light ether. It hits the right balence of seriousness and entertaining.
I would highly recommend taking children to see this film.
