Its something that seems like a very difficult task and in that regard, Im lucky. From a very young age, Ive had an extremely strong sense of self. I am a man of God. My identity is making myself to be the best servant to his word that I can be. From childhood church service with my mother, to private school, summer camps, college and eventually my time as a seminarian, I have never wavered in my duty. This is why I am ashamed to admit that I am having a crisis of faith.  After finishing seminary I was granted a deaconship at my parish, which will hopefully result in me becoming ordained. Although any parish would help me to serve our lord, I am particularly blessed. I grew up in a rural town with a beautiful and historical church. It is a small flock, but devoted, as it is considered a holy monument. Not only has the structure stood for hundreds of years, but we have our own personal Saint.  In our faith a person may only become a Saint if they reach a very specific set of criteria. To start, is probably what most people think of in a Saint, they must be good. By this we not only mean that a person must have lived a good life, but also that they performed heroic or charitable acts during their lifetime. This is why most saints have been martyrs, who died by the word of the Lord. If they are not a martyr, they must also have recorded cases of performing “miracles, ” or rather God interceding on their behalf. This can either be an answering of a prayer or other typically inconceivable feats.  The last contributing factor for canonization (or the process of becoming a saint) is one that has been debated for centuries. I myself believe that this should be a requirement, however although I am a studied man of God, of course am not the authority nor do I have any say in the matter. In the traditional rules of canonization, a person who is considered for the sainthood must also be incorruptible. This means that after death, their body must be untouched by decay, as this is surely a sign that God has marked them as venerable. Our Saint Zorana is one of the few notable saints that meets this standard. I could speak on Zorana for hours at length even though we do not know much about her life. What we do know is that she was very eloquent and that her love for God was vigorous. She was born the daughter of a servant to a high born lady of a different faith. At 16 she was expelled from their home for teaching the children her beliefs. From there she joined a convent, but even they doubted her as the Lord spoke to her directly and told her that they should forgo their daily bread in order to feed the homeless children of the town. Even though they barely had enough food for themselves, with prayer she always had enough to make sure that no child went hungry. She died of starvation at a mere 23 years old.  When someone dies of starvation, typically they are diminished to childlike proportions, boney, and sallow in complexion. When Zorana was found, having passed in her sleep, she was the picture of beauty. Even though her body was gaunt and frail and her skin was pale but her cheeks were plump and rosey, her golden hair cascaded around her head like a halo. God had chosen Zorana as a devoted servant and blessed her, even in death, with ethereal beauty. She was incorruptible.  Ever since St. Zoranas death, she has been displayed in our church. Like sleeping beauty, her body lays in a glass coffin, adorned with gold and freshly brought flowers. The older women of the parish leave their rosaries and pocket bibles at the base of her dias. No one knows exactly when she died, but her body still looks as if she is sleeping. This past month, there was a fire. An altar boy placed a candle on the ground, catching the cloths of the altar on fire and quickly setting the holy place ablaze. Wooden pews promptly turned to tinder and spread throughout the building. We were blessed that most of the structure is stone, however wooden support beams did falter in places and will require major repair.  Initially upon discovering what had happened, I was horrified. I could not believe that such a terrible thing could happen to such a holy place. When I arrived upon the scene, I was beside myself. This church has been where my family has worshipped as long as anyone can remember. Yet as I walked through the stone arch where the intricately carved doors used to stand, I was overwhelmed by the spirit of God. In the middle of the room stood Zoranas dias, and through the caved in roof a single beam of light illuminated her heavenly form, and I knew it was a sign that all would be well. Since then, it has been a herculean task to put things back together. Our town has rallied to clean the space, but rebuilding to historical standard will be difficult. I have been tasked with compiling the churchs archives, digitizing what I can and assessing what needs to be sent off for repair. Churches that have been around for as long as ours has, especially those with enough prestige as to have a saint, are often the keepers of primeval religious texts and ours is no different. The books that have been lost to the fire will never be able to be replaced.  Most of the texts that Ive compiled are letters from important church figures, some dating back to biblical times. Ive found one text though, that is troubling. The binding of the book initially matched the rest of what Ive found, however upon further inspection I believe it to be a modern notebook designed to look antique. A sampling of the contents will proceed: “Ok, I need to write this down because I dont know what else to do. I promised myself that I would use this over-priced diary to journal every day and I havent but at least I have enough pages to write down everything I have to say. My name is Alexandria Wester, although I suppose that doesnt matter because no one uses that name anymore. For the last few years I have been, Sister Mary Catherine. I dont even know who would be reading this, so I dont know why I feel the need to justify myself, but Im not even that religious. I became a nun with one specific purpose.  Im a nerd. A big one. Im not even one of those cool nerds who is obsessed with a pop culture phenomenon that I can talk to other people about. For as long as I can remember, all Ive cared about is obscure ancient untranslatable documents. See? Nerdy. If its in an undiscovered language or made up of unknown symbols, Im in.  In high school I came across references online of an unnamed book. Let me tell you, its really hard to search for additional information on something that has no name. I spent literal years pouring over textbooks, and document databases, and weird online forums searching for more information before finding my answer. I still never found a name, or what it really was, but I found a location. A small rural church that was considered historic had the entire book in their private library. It is not an exaggeration to say that I was ecstatic. I literally threw a party. which was just me making margaritas with my cat, but whatever. So at this point I had just started college, and I thought Id be able to pull some strings if my department head signed off. I could not. After quite a bit of research, I discovered that there was no way to access these books, other than being a member of the churchs clergy. This is where my insanity kicked in. I kept going to school, but I also started researching the process to become a nun. Looking back, I really dont know what I was thinking. yes I do, I was thinking “Alexandria, if you do not get a chance to look at this book with your own two eyes it will haunt you for the rest of your life. ” So I joined a convent, went through all the steps. I took the name  Mary Catherine, because you dont have to take the name Mary, but everyone looks at you like youre a criminal if you dont and because Catherine of Alexandria was the patron saint of knowledge. I also stupidly thought I was staying true to myself by keeping part of my name in my new name. I was a model convent member. I acted devoted, I took every opportunity I could to volunteer and work with charities and pray, all while researching ancient languages as much as possible on the side. Eventually, I was able to convince our mother superior to recommend me for the church that I wanted to go to and off I went.  A new nun in a parish is basically the church bitch, I know, Im swearing, I think under my current circumstances its fine. I know that nuns are supposed to be devoted servants of God, but its really frustrating watching the seminarians your age learning divine secrets while you sweep floors and make beds. Even so, I stayed the course. I worked hard, I showed “humility, ” I never questioned an order and I never missed a prayer. Eventually, I was rewarded. No, there was no miraculous day where the priests started treating me like a person, but I didnt care about that. What I did care about was the ultimate prize, a key to the library. Technically my job was cleaning and organizing in there, which I did, but no one seemed to notice if I stayed after hours  After all of my tasks were done, Id go in and light a few candles (I get that its a church, but come one, a I doubt a few modern luxuries would offend God. then Id get to work. From what Id seen online, I would think that The Book (as Id taken to calling it) would have been displayed prominently, but no such luck. It took a lot of searching through the hundreds of tomes tucked away on unsorted shelves.  The only grace I had was that The Book was in no known language, so eliminating others was a quick process. Eventually I did find it. It was simply adorned, inocuas even. The only thing that made it stand out was the cover, hidden as it was tucked into the shelf. On the front of the book was a picture of St. Zorana, the churchs patron Saint.  St. Zorana was some Saint who apparently got kicked out of the house really young and starved herself and her convent to death. Shes considered a Saint because her body never decayed, and the church displays her body as a sort of tourist attraction. I think its really creepy and hate having to dust her display. Over the next few months, I spent every free moment that I had pouring over The Book. Obviously its not in a discernable language, so my first step was to try and find a Rosetta Stone of sorts within the text. Eventually my big break came. Within the text there were quite a few pictures of the human anatomy, and although the text was coded, there were some labeled parts that I was able to distinguish. This lead to a latin translation of those parts, and eventually a latin translation of the majority of the text. Latin is dead, but French, Spanish, and Italian are not. I was able to use my working knowledge of these languages to start to piece together what some of the text meant.  During this time I still had so much work to do. The priests kept me incredibly busy, cleaning, cooking, helping them to research for their sermons, etc. They had never been explicitly kind to me, but there seemed to be a sort of respect for my humility and hard work. Ive noticed a change in the last few weeks. Theres a coldness that wasnt there before. I would have thought Id imagined it if it werent for the fact that my meals were getting smaller and smaller. I brushed it off initially. Maybe with so much time working in the library I wasnt walking as much as Id used to. Maybe I was putting on weight and it was a subtle way to tell me. I know now that this is not the case. I am now lucky to get a third of what my meager meals were when I started my service here. As I worked through the manuscript, I found more and more medical terminology. I was disappointed, thinking that all of my work had gone towards finding a medieval guide to funeral rights. I wish that had been what Id found. It didnt take long for me to discover the real purpose of The Book. Having an incorruptible Saint at your church is an honor. It will ensure that your doors will stay open so that there is always a sacred resting place for those who are chosen by God. It will be a place of pilgrimage, ensuring that there are always newcomers to your town, keeping the economy afloat. If you are a priest, it will ensure that you always have a following.  The Book as I came to find, was not a holy text. It was not a history lost to man. The Book served one specific purpose, to instruct. As I poured through the pages, interpreting as I went, I found out what The Book was for.  Saint Zorana was never known to be incorruptible, thats just what the priests wanted the people to believe. As her body started to decay, the priests of the time had found another young girl who looked similar to her. They had discreetly kidnapped the girl, starved her so that her body looked like Zoranas and then they had murdered her. In the middle of the night, they had dressed her in Zoranas clothing and laid her in the delicate glass coffin, and pretended that this girl was the Saint.  Ill admit that my thoughts ran wild with this discovery. Yesterday, I visited her coffin. I stared into the eyes of the supposed Saint. I noticed the yellowing of her skin, the slight shrinkage around her mouth and eyes. I know that she did not look like this when I arrived, I know it.  According to The Book, there are steps involved to preserve the body for as long as possible, but not forever. According to The Book, every so often, a new body must be found. According to The Book, the girl must first be starved to look  as though thats how she died, before she is killed and the old body is replaced.  I cant help but notice the similarities between myself and the supposed Zorana. I too am pale and blond, and as my diet has changed I notice myself getting thinner and thinner and I am afraid. As a nun Ive forgone all electronics and contact with the outside world, I know that if I were to try and leave Id be stopped. I can only hope that this journal entry will be found and that I am the end of this. ” When I read this, I initially thought it to be fiction. Young seminarians with a lot of time on their hands surely could concoct a tall tale to entertain themselves. And how could anyone doubt the incorruptibility of Zorana? Especially now, after this fire when her body stood untouched by flame. I was sure of my Lord and sure of my path until I turned on the news and saw a report for a missing blond girl whod joined a convent and not been heard from, named Alexandria Wester. True Fiction True Fiction - excellent movie, one of the best released in 2018 I will grant that my expectations were low before watching title It's really hard for me to separate best from favorite. With best, you really have to distinguish what makes it important. Taking into consideration the influence it brought to the medium, be it with writing, direction, cinematography. I re-watched the beginning last night and kept saying I'll watch only one more scene until I was over an hour into it. I forgot how good that movie is. The director is insanely talented guy. Althought True Fiction is very underrated movie. Sure there are classic movies which everyone like, and they are great. But True Fiction is just non stop awesome from start to finish.
